The Simple Path is the Clearest Path
I found these two items at my local grocery store recently, and here’s what is so important: Both of these foods represent a big shift in thinking on the part of two huge processed food companies (Oscar Mayer and Pillsbury). I am not so naive to think that these companies, which both pump out unhealthy foods on a massive scale, have all of a sudden seen the light. But something has shifted… and that something is YOU! Yes, you! You have educated yourself and know that nitrites, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats are unhealthy. Your buying habits have changed. And someone at these companies must have decided that there was money to make by offering up these two choices. I don’t know of any other reason that I have these two options available to me on the supermarket shelf today.
Now, I’m not espousing that you go out and buy bacon and cookies to get healthy. But let’s face it: most of us indulge in these foods at least occasionally. It’s great that we don’t have to poison ourselves with hydrogenated fats to get a ready-made cookie!
Finding these foods in the regular (not organic) area of the grocery store is a huge step forward. In the US, our health is under literal assault from food makers, advertisers, and restaurants. These people think nothing of putting well known carcinogens and heart-disease-causing foods in front of us and our kids. I have always believed that the only route to change is by spreading information. Empowering individuals to make better choices is powerful, as the examples above demonstrate. I’m planning on continuing to spread the word on nutrition, and I am asking you to continue listening.
